Ms Gannon & Ms Browne's Third Class: Rocket Launch
We had lots of fun investigating how rockets launch. Working in groups, we did a rocket launch. First we blew up a balloon and let it go. We watched it fly around the room. Then we decided to control the path of the balloon by connecting it to a piece of string. We tied the string to two chairs. We blew up a balloon and kept it closed using a clothes peg. We attached it to the side of the string using sellotape. Then we removed the peg and the balloon flew along the string like a rocket. The air coming out the back of the balloon pushed the balloon forward like a rocket. We investigated a rocket launch using two balloons.
Ms Bloomer's First Class
Ms Noonan's Junior Infants: Lesson 1 Strand unit: Heat (Linkage Materials and change) Learning outcome: Exploring ice and melting. Understand the effect of heat has on ice and the relationship between the level of heat and the speed of melting.
2 containers of water placed in the freezer overnight. 1 container left on the radiator with direct heat in the morning and 1 container left near the door away from heat source.
The children gave their predictions as to which block of ice would melt the fastest and why.
Throughout the day the children monitored the ice melting.
We checked to see if our predictions were correct.
*Surprise discovery: the block of ice was left floating in the water as it melted. This brought us on to the discussion of how and why is the ice floating? What makes things float? Observation – “it looks like an iceberg in the Arctic”
Lesson 2 Strand unit: Forces (Floating and sinking) Learning Outcome: investigate how forces act on objects through experimenting with different materials group objects that will float or sink push objects into water. Experiment – Dancing Raisins Observing the effect, the bubbles in 7up have on raisins. Comparing raisins in a glass of water to the raisins in a glass of 7up. We discussed what is making the raisins float and sink. What does an object need to float? – air. Geography - Discussed the environment and weather in the Arctic Aistear
Water play – floating and sinking (Ice, artic sea creatures, bubble wrap, foam, etc.)
